  • Welcomed everyone, explained the agenda and open floor rules, and voting eligibility
  • Thank you to Zoo Atlanta for allowing the use of the building for the meeting
  • Next meeting is Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 7:30pm
  • New member welcome and introductions
  • APD Captain McGee provided a brief crime update
    •  Reminded people cars continue to be broken into and to keep cars cleaned out
    • A sink was stolen from a Grant Park restroom
  • Love Your Block Grant - $1,000 grant to help beautify the community. Please submit ideas to [email protected]

  • Passed around sign-up and volunteer sheet, make sure info is correct
  • Advised new members to check in or sign in
  • New GPNA Mission Statement was presented: “Preserving History. Embracing Diversity. Building Community.”
    • Motion to support the new GPNA Mission Statement was made, seconded and passed unanimously

  • Reminder that GPNA is a 501c3 so all donations are tax deductible

  • Minutes from February 2014 meeting were presented
Public Safety Chair, Chris Newman
  • Zone 6 update
    • Community Prosecutor, Keith Lamar, [email protected], 404.612.7012
      • Crime is down 29% overall in Zone 6
      • Richard Carter is the current case being worked on. 104 prior arrests.
      • Car break ins are the number one problem, especially with visitors to the area. Please look out for visitors to Grant Park and point out to them when they are leaving valuable visible in their cars if you see this happening.

    • Please attend Citizen CourtWatch training, March 29. Register with Reiko Ward.
    • A Citizen’s Gang Task Force aimed at focusing on proactive ways to combat crime is being planned for April. More info coming.
    • GPNA Public Safety Committee and GPSP will plan a personal safety class for April which will involve weapons. More info coming.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School
  • Maynard Jackson High School
    • Women's Chorus received a SUPERIOR RATING (the highest rating a choir can receive)at the Georgia Music Educators' Association's (GMEA) Large Group Performance Evaluation (formerly known as the Choral Festival) on February 27th
    • The Chorus, Dance and African Drummers performed for Wesley International’s Black History Month
  • Wesley International
    • Five Guys Dine Out, March 21, 4-8:30pm
    • Phoenix Auction, March 29, 5-10pm, Trees Atlanta, 255 Chester Ave
  • SEACS (South East Atlanta Communities for Schools)
    • Feb 20th SEACS meeting update
      • Discussed the current APS budget and how it relates to the issue of our middle schools for the Maynard Jackson Cluster.
      • Currently there are two middle schools serving our cluster- Coan Middle School and King Middle.PS hosting two Community Meetings to discuss future of Coan and King Middle
      • March 18th at Coan Middle School; March 24th, 6 pm, King Middle School
  • You can register your Kroger Plus Card to support the following local 501(c)(3) organizations: GPNA, GPPN, all local schools
    • Schools can also receive money from the following merchant cards when you register them: Publix, Kroger, Target and Georgia Natural Power under their True Blue Schools Campaign. Signing up is free.

Land Use and Zoning Committee Chair, Rick Hudson
  • Lee Mayweather asking for variance for home on 234 Woodward Ave. to reduce front yard setback from 30’ to 21’
    • Motion to support the variance was made, seconded and passed unanimously
  • 800 Glenwood discussion regarding revised site plans with more BeltLine elements and need to support Carla Smith’s PD-MU rezoning legislation.
  • Motion to support the PD-MU rezoning legislation was made, seconded and passed unanimously
Historic Committee Chair, Paul Simo
  • Preservation Minute: It’s spring. Please DO NOT pressure wash historic homes! It will cause serious damage.
  • Reminder that Grant Park is in two historic districts, both local and national
  • Historic Design Regs sub committee has been formed to review & update Grant Park’s historic design regs.
  • 150th Anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Atlanta is approaching. Details coming to the website soon.
Parks & Recreation Chair, Marie Mower
  • Friends of Grant Park Recreation Center email [email protected]; looking to add more programs; survey coming
  • Friends of Ormond-Grant Park meeting, April 7, 6:30pm, Grant Park Rec Center - $50K fundraising goal with city match
  • New Grant Park Conservancy website coming
Open Floor Discussion:
  • Leslie Grant
    • 6 new APS Board Members in the process of searching for a new Superintendant.
    • Maynard Jackson High School (MJHS) ribbon cutting ceremony planned for April.
    • Urban agriculture program coming to MJHS
    • Forming a charter school integration task force
  • There is a petition to bring a dog park to Grant Park
    • It was mentioned a dog park is planned for the Boulevard Crossing Park in 2017
    • Grant Park is more central
    • Olmsted’s 1903 original design plans do not include a dog park
